SYNOPSIS:

A cast of 7 actors play the principal characters, miscellaneous others, and 7 narrators, to compress Thackeray’s huge “novel without a hero”, in which he is relentless in his satirical comment upon the corrupt values, vanities and morality of the aristocracy, middle classes and military imperialism in early 19th century Britain.

Becky Sharp, the impoverished orphan of an artist, leaves Miss Pinkerton’s Academy for Young Ladies, as house guest to wealthy and well-bred Amelia Sedley. For both, marriage is the most important step to wealth and happiness. But Becky has only her cunning, intelligence and drive to fall back on.

Becky begins to flirt with Amelia’s bumptious brother Joseph who appears to be earning a fortune from the east India Company, while Amelia is smitten by the effete and dashing Captain George Osbourne. Becky is forced to proceed to her posting as governess at Queen’s Crawleys where Sir Pitt demonstrates that country gentry are not always what Becky, ever adapting, had presumed. Plans with the elderly Sir Pitt don’t work out and Becky secretly marries his son Captain Rawdon Crawley, who is promptly disinherited.
