THE PSYCHIC

“A Murder Mystery … of Sorts”

Adelaide Repertory Theatre

Written By: Sam Bobrick (2010)

Directed By: Erik Strauts

The Psychic follows the chaotic life of Adam Webster, a down-on-his-luck writer, who has put a sign in his apartment window, in desperation to make the rent: “Psychic Readings $25”.  The sign soon draws the interest of the lovely and conflicted Laura, her shady husband Roy, Roy’s mistress Rita, a gangster named Johnny Bubbles and ace Detective Norris Coslow.

In the many and varied twists that follow The Psychic entangles Adam in what initially appears to be a typical murder mystery send-up.  However, as the story develops we realise that there is much more going on here than in any normal who-dun-it, be it a thriller or a comedy.  The initially believable (at least marginally so) characters surrounding Adam gradually morph into exaggerated stereo-types.  As the play progresses we realize that they are all actually figments of Adam’s fertile and wishful imagination, and so do they …!

A clever fun play with an interesting dramatic twist.

Contemporary interior setting.  Full length but shortish (approx. 2 hrs, including interval). This will be an Australian premiere.

Roles Available:

Adam (30s): A pleasant energetic young man – a hopeful but as yet undiscovered mystery writer. On 93%.

Laura (30s): An attractive & proper young woman. The jilted wife. Adam’s love interest to be. On 70%.

Johnny (30s): Tough looking but likeable. A typical 1940’s gangster. On 36%

Norris (40s): A no nonsense down-to-earth NYPD Detective.  On 33%.

Roy (30s): A good looking guy but in a slimy way. Laura’s cheating husband. On 19%.

Rita (20s): A very sexy young woman. The femme fatale. Roy’s mistress. On 18%.

All the characters need to be played outrageously larger than life – eventually.
